NEWARK, NJ -- The West Orange girls basketball team conquered long odds to reach the Essex County Tournament semifinals, but top-seeded University High School was too much for the Mountaineers.

University broke the game open with a big second quarter and went on to a 54-31 victory over West Orange in the ECT semifinals Wednesday at Weequahic High School.

West Orange (9-14), which has been beset by various injuries during the season, took a 6-4 lead after the first quarter, but University unleashed a 21-8 spurt in the second quarter to take an 11-point lead at the half. Mackenzie Dover led the Mountaineers with 16 points. Sophomore guard Kiley Capstraw scored seven points in her first game back in the lineup in several weeks.

Tara Johnson led University (21-2) with 16 points and eight rebounds.
