WEST ORANGE, NJ — After a scoreless first period against Parsippany Hills, the West Orange ice hockey team yielded a goal in the second period but went on to lose, 3-1, on Friday in the Essex County Holiday Tournament.
The Mountaineers jumped out to a 1-0 lead at 3:38 of the second period when Davis Ward pounced on the rebound of an Andrew Raymon point shot and slipped the rebound under Parsippany's senior goaltender, Justin Wellman.
Two minutes later, Parsippany pulled even when sophomore defenseman David Zislinkis scored the first of his two goals on the evening, snapping a quick wrist shot past West Orange netminder Julian Melendez after a solo rush up the ice.
Parsippany took the lead for good with just 3:09 remaining in the second period when defenseman Suveer Singh scored what proved to be the game-winning goal. The senior took a feed from Michael Hammer in the low slot and shoveled a shot past Melendez.
Zislinkis sealed the victory when he jumped out of the penalty box, picked up a loose puck at center ice, and netted an empty-net goal with just 32 seconds remaining.
Melendez made 27 saves for West Orange, and Wellman made 38 after recently hitting his 2,000th career save. This was the first win for Parsippany Hills, which improves the team to 1-7. The Mountaineers now stand at 2-5 overall.
