WEST ORANGE, NJ -- The West Orange football team has been seeded fourth in the NJSIAA Section 2, Group 5 playoffs that begin next weekend.
That draw will pit the Mountaineers (6-3) against Piscataway, the defending North Jersey, Group 5 state champion. But West Orange will get to host that first-round game, Friday night at 7 p.m.
It had appeared as though the Mountaineers would have to play Piscataway on the road next weekend, but West Orange defeated Barringer, 52-21, in its final regular-season game Friday night while Piscataway was losing, forcing the seeds of the two teams--and the homefield advantage--to flip.
Under first-year head coach Darnell Grant, West Orange has scored 91 points in its last two games, and its three losses all were against highly regarded playoff teams--including an 8-6 loss to East Orange in a game that was scoreless after four quarters. That was one of three games in which West Orange shut out its opponent through four quarters.
