2013 Plainfield Houses of Worship Tour: A Historical & Architectural Exploration

Soaring ceilings that seem to vanish in the darkness, rich gems of Tiffany glass highlighted by sunlight, intricate centuries old carvings, resonant organ pipes and angelic voices, a rich history of people who have shaped Plainfield for the last two hundred plus years – all just a taste of what visitors will experience as part of the 2013 Plainfield Houses of Worship Tour:  A Historical & Architectural Exploration on Saturday, April 27th from 12:30-4:30PM.  The tour is sponsored in part by the Plainfield Cultural & Heritage Commission.

Nine churches - Crescent Ave. Presbyterian, 1st Park Baptist, 1st Unitarian Society, Grace Episcopal, Mt. Olive Baptist, Plainfield Friends Quaker Meeting House, St. Bernard of Clairvaux & St. Stanislaus Kostka Parrish, Shiloh Baptist and United Presbyterian; each with congregations that have been active for one hundred years or more, will open their doors for this phenomenal event.  Participants will be able to explore their inner realms and learn of their Historical influence in Plainfield.  Hosted by the Plainfield Chamber of Commerce the tour will introduce both local residents and community visitors to a part of Plainfield not often seen. 

Participants should begin their tour at St. Bernard of Clairvaux & St. Stanislaus Kostka Church, where they will be given a tour guidebook with a map of the area, a brief history of each house of worship, and a schedule of special events offered at several of the churches during the afternoon.  They will also be given a wrist band that will allow entrance at each site and to a tour closing reception.  Visitors may travel at their own pace, seeing all ten churches or enjoying longer visits at a select few.

For those without their own transportation, a free bus, compliments of Julia Porterfield, owner of Plainfield’s Amaker &Porterfield Bus Company, will be provided.  The bus will make pick-ups from three senior housing locations (1272 Park Avenue, 601 West Seventh Street and 510-520 East. Front Street) between 11:30am-12:30pm and then begin the tour.  The riders will spend about 20 minutes at each church before ending up at the closing reception.  Bus seating is limited and will require a reservation by calling 908-369-1152.  Volunteers will be at each location to give the seniors their guidebooks and wristbands.

General Admission Tickets are $15 in advance and $20 at the door.  All Student and Senior Citizen (65+) Tickets will be $10 (advance or at the door).  .Tickets may be purchased Online at www.paypal.com, click on “Buy”, click on “Make a Payment”, insert your email address, insert plainfieldchamberofcommerce90@gmail.com and select a payment method; OR in advance by visiting any of the tour churches (hours of availability may be limited); OR at the Chamber Office (between 10:30am – 1:30pm – Mondays – Thursdays) located in The Incubator, 320 Park Avenue Plainfield NJ.
