Young Cartoonists Awarded For ‘Addamseque’ Works
WESTFIELD, NJ – Three local homeowners, two of them on Downer Street, have reason to be upbeat this week as they have won the AddamsFest “Haunt Your House” home decorating contest.
Organizers awarded the first place to the owners of 440 Downer St. Fake boards cover windows to the structure with the words “Beware Spiders,” and at least a dozen of what appear to be the long-legged creatures can be seen “crawling” on the home’s exterior.
The owners of 220 East Dudley Ave., who adorned the gate of their residence with a skeleton and the entryway to the home with skeletons of canines, among other decorations, earned the second-place prize, organizers of the festival honoring Westfield native and Addams Family creator Charles Addams announced.
Third place went to the owners of 531 Downer St., who have a dinosaur-sized skeleton and other creatures set up in the home’s front yard. The winners were announced at a Trunk-Or-Treat contest held Sunday.
What about the cartoonists?
The announcement of the home decorating contest winners came as the festival organizers also announced the winners of a Charles Addams cartoon contest, which had Westfield High School students create “Addamseque” cartoons.
The student winners are as follows:
- First Place: Emily O’Connell, Untitled
- Second Place: Morgan Eng, “Lunch Time!”
- Third Place: Julia Plawker, “Normal Is An Allusion”
The winners work, along with 50 participants' artworks will be on display at Westfield’s Town Hall community room through Friday, Nov. 2 at 425 East Broad St.
