After 47 Years of Operation, Jade Isle Set to Close Its Doors in Scotch Plains

SCOTCH PLAINS, NJ — The iconic Jade Isle Restaurant located at the corner of Terrill Road and Second Street in Scotch Plains will close its doors forever after its last day on  Feb. 18. A phone call to the restaurant on Saturday confirmed that the Jade Isle's long history would come to an end Sunday.

Jade Isle has served a menu of traditional Chinese and Polynesian dishes and cocktails in its "tiki room" since 1971. Its "umbrella drink" cocktail selections included "Polynesian Concoctions," such as Mai Tais, Zombies and Jade Isle Punch. The sit-down restaurant's opening pre-dated the proliferation of Chinese fast food take-out places in the area.

Scotch Plains resident Marc Grobman lamented on Facebook: Ending a 40+-year history, the old school Cantonese restaurant Jade Isle, long reviled for its potholed parking lot and 1970s décor, but beloved by those of us who’ve enjoyed its food, potent yet inexpensive exotic Trader Vic-style drinks, and charming staff, closes after Sunday, Feb. 18.

In recent years, Jade Isle lost some of its original glory. The restaurant closed briefly in September 2014 for repairs, and its building and parking lot showed signs of age. However, loyal customers raved about the food the restaurant served:

"Great food and prices plus the prices are very affordable. Love the friendly staff," wrote Linda Gerber in a review on the restaurant's Facebook page on January 24, 2018.

"Incredible selection of super authentic dim sum. A jewel," posted Richard Meissner  on June 19, 2017.

Fans of the Jade Isle have just one more day to enjoy "Classic Favorites" including the Dim Sum Brunch, Moo Goo Gai Pan, Cantonese Sesame Chicken and Tahitian Steak.
