WESTFIELD, NJ — The Westfield High School senior helped to set a school record.

Ajay Olson, 17, broke the record in the 4 x 200 relay on Tuesday in New York City, qualifying for the New Balance Nationals Indoor championship. The team's time: 1:30.53.

Olson is this week’s Ron Bansky and Associates Allstate Westfield Athlete of the Week.

“His performances have not just been strong, but they’ve also been remarkably consistent,” said head boys track coach Christopher Tafelski. “The team needs seniors to deliver on a consistent basis. This is a model for his younger teammates.”

Olson will be attending Bowdoin College next year, where he plans to continue his track career.

“People say that track is not a team sport, but that’s not the reality,” Olson said. “Without the support of my teammates during practices and races, none of my success would be possible.”

Olson noted that his relay team won the 4 x 400 Group V State Championship with a time of 3:26.11 in Toms River Feb. 16.

The races, he said, are a culmination of the work his teammates and himself do daily.

Olson started running as a third-grader at the Westfield Area YMCA’s Flyers Club, which he later served as a volunteer coach for.

In addition to the strides Olson has made on the track, he worked at a management consulting company this summer and as an intern for Westfield Mayor Shelley Brindle’s election campaign.

Individually, Olson has won his heats in the 400-meter at both the Union County Championship and at the Sectional Championship, Tafelski said.

Olson and his team head to the Meet of Champions on Saturday were they are set to run the 4 x 400-meter relay again.

What are his plans at Bowdoin College next year, besides running track?

“I’m either going to major in economics or biology,” Olson said.

The New Balance Nationals will be held at the Armory in New York City March 8 - 10.
