WESTFIELD, NJ — Westfield High School golfer Anna Bowman recently won the North Jersey Conference Championship as an individual for her second consecutive year, helping her team win the championship, as well. She then went on to finish ninth overall at the state tournament, with the entire WHS girls team finishing fifth.

“She is the standout player on our girls golf team,” head coach Katie Brenny said.

Now a sophomore, this week’s Ron Bansky and Associates Allstate Westfield Athlete of the Week is just getting started.

“Winning the conference championship as both an individual and as a team was exciting,” Bowman said. “That was the first time the team had won a championship and had an undefeated record within the conference. Winning the individual title for the second year in a row was also very thrilling and in the future I hope to have all four years as the individual conference champion title holder, and for the team to have another undefeated season next year in the conference.”

Bowman said she loves the feeling that she gets when she hits a great shot or has a great round.

“That feeling is invigorating, and it shows that my hard work is paying off,” she said. “Also, golf gives me confidence.  When I am on the course I know what I am supposed to do and how to execute it. When I have an awesome round it’s the best feeling in the world.”

Bowman considers her longtime coach, Leo Tabick, to be her mentor.

“I have been taking lessons with Leo since I was 10 years old,” she said. “He shaped me into one of the most competitive players in the state, and continues to encourage me every day.  He has not only taught me about the game of golf, but he has taught me to have confidence, be the best person that I can be and to live in the moment.”

She has high hopes for the future.

“In the next couple years at Westfield High School I hope that the golf team can continue to have an undefeated season, and be able to make it to states next year with me. I would also want to win the both the individual title and the team title for states.” Bowman said. “My dream is to play in U.S. Women’s Open and become a professional golfer.”
