WESTFIELD, NJ — Members of the Westfield High School varsity softball team know they can depend on pitcher Bridget Hyland, according head coach Catlin MacDonald.

“She is always someone who we can depend on to push her teammates to play well,” MacDonald said of this week’s Ron Bansky and Associates Allstate Wesfield Athlete of the Week. “We also know we can depend on her in challenging situations on the field. Bridget is a strong competitor.”

In return, Hyland depends on her teammates.

“We’re all really close on our team,” she said. “The only reason I have any success is because I have such a great team behind me.” In particular, she praised catcher Erica Lawrence.

“We work really well together and she calls a great game,” Hyland said.

Hyland, now a senior, began playing softball in kindergarten and became a pitcher in the fourth grade.

“I love that it’s just such a mental sport,” she said.

Pitching has taught her how to stay cool and calm in high-pressure situations and, as a result, “That’s something that isn’t scary for me,” she said. “It’s fun.”

Off the field, Hyland writes for the Westfield High School student newspaper Hi’s Eye. She will attend Villanova University in the fall, where she plans to study journalism.
