WESTFIELD, NJ — The Westfield High School junior ran a personal best 4:21 mile last week, putting him at fourth in the school’s indoor track history.
With his 11-second personal record, Charlie Stock is the current state leader in the indoor mile. Stock is this week’s Ron Bansky and Associates Allstate Westfield Athlete of the Week.
“I try not to get lost in the times and rankings and just want to focus on racing to win,” Stock said. “It is fun running fast in the winter, but my mind is set on the spring and championship season.”
Since the winter season started, the tracks have been covered and runners were forced to reduce their mileage and run on the roads. Leading up to the race, Stock ran 50 miles and completed two speed workouts per week.
“This was a tremendous jump in performance for him, one that we hoped we would see eventually see this year, but not something that we expected to see happen so soon,” said head coach Chris Tafelski. “He was on a great trajectory last March when the spring season was shut down.”
Stock was aiming for a time under 4:30, which would already become a seven-second personal best. The 4:21 time surprised him, but he started gaining confidence in his training prior to the race. Overall, Stock has improved his mile time by 43 seconds from his average of 5:04 in the 2019 indoor season.
“We didn't really have any idea what kind of times our guys would hit, based on the fact that we hadn't competed in so long and our track has been covered since before the winter season started,” Tafelski said.
The boys varsity track team heads into a meet at the Bennett Center in Toms River. It is scheduled for next Tuesday.
