WESTFIELD, NJ — In volleyball, the libero is a defensive specialist who wears a different jersey and is not limited to the typical rules of rotation on the court.
David Broughton, a 17-year-old Westfield High School junior on the varsity boys volleyball team, is among the best liberos in New Jersey, having tallied 260 digs and 20 service aces this year, head coach Ed Saggio said. Broughton is this week’s Ron Banksy and Associates Allstate Westfield Athlete of the Week.
“David has developed into one of the best liberos in the state,” Saggio said. “I have had many great passers in my career and he ranks right up there with the best of them. Receiving a serve is an art. It’s not easy to do. The great thing is I get him back next season.”
The team finished its spring season with a 2-1 win over Linden May 17. Broughton said it was a technically sound game for a team building itself after becoming a varsity sport for its first time in Westfield last year.
Broughton, a tri-captain this year, has played other sports in past seasons, including tennis and soccer. He also ran track but has found volleyball to be consuming.
“My life has pretty much become volleyball all around,” he said.
Broughton said he enjoys the team aspect of the sport as well as the intense competition that comes with volleyball.
The daily practices this season have been fun, he said, as the team has learned both the basics of the game and moved onto more advanced techniques.
What would Broughton tell his younger counterparts?
“I would say if you’re on the fence about trying it, to go and push yourself to get involved in the sport as well as to play club volleyball outside of the school,” he said. “Your skills will just get better the more you play.”
