WESTFIELD, NJ — The Westfield varsity baseball team went 5-0 during opening week, and left fielder and relief pitcher Enzo Mizerek was a key piece to its success.
In the Blue Devils’ first two games, Mizerek, the leadoff hitter, went 5-7 at the plate, scored four runs and stole six bases. The Westfield High School senior is this week’s Ron Bansky and Associates Westfield Allstate Athlete of the Week.
“My approach at the plate is to get on base and advance aggressively to put our three, four and five hitters in the best position to drive in runs,” Mizerek said. “When you have energetic teammates and a simple approach, the pieces seem to come together.”
After having last season canceled due to the pandemic, Mizerek and Westfield feel a new motivation.
“Luckily, the distanced nature of baseball allows for us to practice and play safely, but it is still nerve-wracking to know that one exposure has the potential to suspend or cancel our season,” he said. “I could not be more grateful for the lengthy schedule that our coaches and athletic director put together this spring.”
Although they are playing in the competitive Union County Watchung Division, Mizerek believes the Blue Devils are “well-equipped to contend for multiple championships this year.”
Mizerek will attend Colgate University in the fall where he plans to major in politics, philosophy and economics.
“I’m fascinated in the subject matter and I think it’s a great interdisciplinary study that creates a pathway to numerous careers,” he said. “I love writing and formal analysis, so it fits my academic style perfectly. Colgate is a wonderful school that I look forward to attending, and I plan on playing on its club baseball team.”
