Allstate Westfield Athlete of the Week: Faith Dobosiewicz

WESTFIELD, NJ — In the Westfield High School girls varsity soccer game against rivals Scotch Plains-Fanwood Saturday, Faith Dobosiewicz provided Westfield with the lone score that ultimately proved to win the game. She found the ball at her feet in front of the 18 yard box, on a pass from Josie Greenwood, who sent a perfect pass that split Raiders defenders, creating wide-open space for Dobosiewicz.

Dobosiewicz then unleashed a rocket off her foot, and her strike soared right over the hands of Scotch Plains goalie Maya Kessler and cushioned the upper left-hand corner of the goal to sever the tie after 48 minutes of scoreless play.

“I know Faith's ability, so I wasn't entirely surprised that she hit a shot like that,” coach Alex Schmidt said of this week's Ron Bansky and Associates Allstate Westfield Athlete of the Week. “To hit a perfect shot into the upper 90 in such a big game is definitely a special goal and one that she, her teammates, and the fans won't soon forget.”

It wast the first time the Lady Blue Devils defeated SP-F since 2011.

“To score and break that streak is really an amazing feeling,” Dobosiewicz said that day. “It’s amazing to beat Scotch Plains.”

Dobosiewicz is a sophomore at WHS.

“I am still really getting to know her,” Schmidt said. “What I can tell so far is that she is a very gritty player who is extremely driven and wants to be in those ‘big’ moments. Like any sophomore, she is following the lead of the seniors and knows her place on the team.”

Schmidt sees more goals in Dobosiewicz’s future.

“With Faith’s size — 5’9” — and her soccer IQ, the sky’s the limit for her,” said the coach. “It’s really up to Faith on how dedicated she is in improving her weaknesses and strengthening what currently makes her so good to eventually see where she ends up. I’ve had many players with potential, but it’s what you do with that potential that sets you apart from everyone else.”
