WESTFIELD, NJ — The Westfield High School senior helped lead the girls’ varsity soccer team to a 1-0 win in a state final game against Union Township Monday.

The game marks one in a series of successes for the team and for Faith Dobosiewicz, a 17-year-old defender holding midfield for Westfield High School. Dobosiewicz is this week’s Ron Bansky and Associates Allstate Westfield Athlete of the Week.

“Julia Weinstein hit me a good ball out of the corner,” Dobosiewicz said. “I was able to get my head on it, get it in the goal, and we were able to keep that lead for the rest of the game.”

It is not first time this season that Dobosiewicz, who has committed to play soccer at Rutgers next year, delivered for the Lady Blue Devils.

“She had one of the all-time performances of any athlete I’ve ever coached during a one-week span,” said head coach Alexander Schmidt. “Not only did she score in the semi-finals to help us defeat Scotch Plains Fanwood, which hasn't been done in nine years, but she also scored the first goal and set up the second goal against Cranford after being down 2-0 in the UCT Finals.”

Dobosiewicz said she most enjoys the friendships she her teammates have developed.

“I just love how close we are and how close we’ve become since the pre-season,” Dobosiewicz said. “It’s an aspect of the team that not everyone gets.”

As a team captain, Dobosiewicz said, she’s learning about being a leader. Sometimes, it’s in how she speaks with her fellow players and other times leadership is rooted in the play on the field, she said.

“We’ve definitely had a lot of challenges with our competition,” Dobosiewicz said. “Obviously, we don’t back down from challenges — especially this year.”

Dobosiewicz said the team has surpassed the public’s expectations.

“This season we’ve definitely been seen as underdogs, and we’ve definitely proven everyone wrong as far as how well we’ve been playing,” she said. “We’ve definitively come up big in moments.”

In addition to playing soccer, Dobosiewicz also plays basketball and is a member of the French club at Westfield High School. “I love the language,” she said.

Still, Dobosiewicz dedicates much of her time to soccer. It is something her coach appreciates.

“The mindset of our team is driven by our senior leaders,” Schmidt said. “And Faith, being a senior and one of our captains, has a large part to do with that.”
