WESTFIELD, NJ — A captain of the girls varsity volleyball team, senior Gianna Mangiamele recently committed to play volleyball at the Division III Franklin & Marshall College.

The 17-year-old outside and right-side hitter is this week’s Ron Bansky and Associates Allstate Westfield Athlete of the Week.

“She is a class act. Great student, driven athlete,” said head coach Beverly Torok. “I'm very happy about her success.”

Magniamele said she has been playing volleyball for six years — a sport she’s enjoyed from the beginning.

“I fell in love with the game as soon as I started playing,” Magniamele said. “It is a high intensity sport that requires teamwork and communication to succeed.”

Due to COVID-19 restrictions, the Westfield High School volleyball season is among the winter sports in New Jersey to have been postponed until March 1.

“I was disappointed that we were not able to play during our regular season and compete in the annual Pink Out game to raise money for breast cancer,” Mangiamele said. “This is a big part of the program, so it is unfortunate that we were not able to participate.”

Mangiamele also plays for VB Rags Volleyball Academy. But due to COVID-19 restrictions, Magniamele and her club team will also not be participating in the tournaments they had planned on attending.

“The best part of the club season is the travel and tournaments,” she said. “However, we are making the best of the season and continue to train as hard as we would have during normal circumstances.”

Despite the disappointment this fall, Mangiamele said she is excited to be signed to play at Franklin & Marshall College next year.

“I love the competitive atmosphere that is created, both academically and athletically, which will push me to strive for my best in everything I do,” Magniamele said. “I am most looking forward to fostering relationships with my teammates, coaches and professors throughout my 4 years at Franklin and Marshall. I can’t wait to get on campus again and compete.”

Mangiamele thanked her coaches, “both high school and club, for all their dedication to the sport and their players.” She added, “I could not have done it without them.”
