WESTFIELD, NJ — Blue Devils quarterback Hank Shapiro led Westfield to a victory against Watchung Hills High School on Friday.
“Three touch-down passes. He really managed the game well, and I’m happy with the way he is leading our team this year,” said Jim DeSarno, head football coach at Westfield High School, said of this week's Ron Bansky and Associates Allstate Westfield Athlete of the Week.
Shapiro’s throwing last Friday helped the team gain 108 yards and secure the win over Watchung Hills 27-13, putting the Westfield High School team at 1-1 as it heads into it’s Saturday game against Old Bridge.
But it is more than just the 16-year-old junior’s football performance that has earned him recognition.
“He’s just a hardworking student – on and off the field,” DeSarno said. “He’s good in the classroom as well. He’s just an awesome kid.”
Shapiro, who is studying journalism while at Westfield High School, said he plans to write for his school’s student newspaper, Hi’s Eye.
Shapiro said he has been accepted to Lehigh University and will keep looking at colleges in the coming months.
“I’m interested in journalism and communications, but also in business,” Shapiro said.
Westfield's win over Watchung Hill last week is as much about his teammates' contributions as it is about his own, he said.
“The team played really well on Friday,” Shapiro said. “The line did a great job of blocking.”
