WESTFIELD, NJ — As a forward on the Westfield High School varsity girls soccer team, senior Hannah Hawkins has had three goals and four assists so far this season, including one goal and one assist in Thursday’s 6-0 victory against Union.

But for all of her accomplishments, it’s how she plays the game that makes Hawkins this week’s Ron Bansky and Associates Allstate Westfield Athlete of the Week.

“I wish everyone approached the game like Hannah. She is as selfless as they come,” head coach Alexander Schmidt said.

Hawkins’ teammates know that they can turn to her when they need advice, according to Schmidt.

“Hannah is amazing. She's not the type of girl who you would recognize as a team leader until you looked more closely. She doesn't like the spotlight and tries to stay out of it as much as possible,” he said. "She isn't the vocal leader on our team, which doesn't mean she isn't a leader. Hannah listens extremely well and is very aware of what is going on with the team and her teammates. Great leaders are first great listeners."

Expect to see more from Hawkins as the season continues.

“Hannah is really starting to hit her stride. She looks more comfortable than ever on the field and her confidence is growing every day,” Schmidt said. "She is the epitome of the quote, ‘Hard work beats talent when talent doesn't work hard.’”
