WESTFIELD, NJ — On Friday, Westfield High School senior running back Jack Curry picked up right where he left off last season, scoring two touchdowns off 178 rushing yards. The Blue Devils football team handily defeated Montgomery on the road 35-6, avenging their opening night loss to the Cougars from the 2014 season.

“It’s a great feeling to start off the season with a victory like that. As a team I think we played awesome on both sides of the ball,” said Curry, this week’s Ron Bansky and Associates Allstate Westfield Athlete of the Week.

As a junior, Curry rushed for 1,366 total yards, 124.2 yards per game, and made 11 touchdowns. One of three captains on this year’s team, Curry has become the focal point of the Blue Devils offense, receiving 28 handoffs in Friday’s win.

“All my success starts upfront with the O-Line. They do an unbelievable job of opening up holes and make my job a lot easier,” Curry said.

Curry’s first touchdown Friday night opened up the scoring for the Blue Devils, coming off a short goal line rush. For the second, Curry was able to push through the Montgomery’s defensive line and break free for 55 yards.

“Jack is a great running back because he knows how to follow his blocks and he has great vision,” senior offensive-lineman Thomas Morley said. “I expect Jack to have a great season that will have more and more colleges begging him to go their school next year.”

Although Curry hopes to play in college, he said his main focus is to lead Westfield to a state title.

“I expect nothing but the best from this team,” Curry said. “There is a lot of talent on our roster this year and I think we have the chance to go all the way.”
