WESTFIELD, NJ — Westfield High School varsity football linebacker Jake Dayon helped his team become three-time state champions last week. In Thursday’s championship game against Bridgewater-Raritan, the senior had an interception and eight tackles with two for-losses.
This week’s Ron Bansky and Associates Allstate Westfield Athlete of the Week is inspired by his family and team, and sometimes the two overlap. Don Dayon, Jake’s father and one of the team’s coaches, “has taught me everything I know about the game,” Jake Dayon said, “and it has been great sharing my journey with him.”
“The thing I've noticed most about Jake's growth on the team,” said Don Dayon, “is that he has enjoyed each step of process along the way. As a sophomore he was happy just looking to do his job and follow the seniors’ lead. As a junior he was able to take on a bigger role and earn a spot as a starter and just wanted to make an impact each week for the team. But as a senior, Jake was really excited that he and his fellow seniors were going to get to lead and pass on their whole experience to the younger guys on the team. To Jake, the team is family.”
Dayon has played football since the third grade.
“I get to play with my lifelong friends,” the linebacker said. “Football is only as good as the people who you play with. I have been blessed to play with the greatest teammates and coaches I know.”
Dayon said that winning three straight state championships was something you dream about as a little kid. Now it’s a reality for the Blue Devils.
“It is something my teammates and I will cherish for the rest of our lives,” he said.
Outside of football, Dayon works as a camp counselor at the Westfield Recreation Department and has an internship with Westfield Town Councilman David Oliveira.
Unsure of where he will attend college in the fall, Dayon hopes to major in Middle Eastern Studies and Arabic and participate in the Army ROTC program. He hopes one day to work in the FBI or Secret Service.
Nadia Matin is a student at Westfield High School participating in a journalism program with TAPinto Westfield.
