WESTFIELD, NJ — Distance runner Jake Triarsi, one of Westfield High School’s track & field captains, anchored the Blue Devils distance medley relay to the win over Union Catholic Saturday at the Blue Devil Classic. He will race at the Penn Relays this weekend as a member of the 4x800 relay.

“Jake has emerged as one of our most consistent guys in every aspect — training, lifestyle  and competition,” head track & field coach Chris Tafelski said of this week’s Ron Bansky and Associates Allstate Westfield Athlete of the Week. “He has had his share of setbacks and hard times over the course of his career, but he has learned from them and become stronger physically and psychologically as a result.”

“What I love about running is that you get out what you put in,” the senior said. “The only thing that you have to worry about is the amount of work you put in and everything else will fall in line. Also, it’s something that anyone can do and it’s a sport that you can do for your entire life. Not to mention the community of great people that I’ve met through running.”

Triarsi said he’s inspired by his teammates.

“I train with them every day and watching my teammates on all levels perform well inspires me to run at my highest level,” Triarsi said. “Everyone on the team puts so much into their training and to watch all that hard work pay off inspires me.”

Triarsi is looking forward to what the season has in store for the team.

“And all of us seniors are looking to close our high school careers in big fashion in the upcoming meets and leave it all on the track,” he said.

“As a coach, it’s wonderful to see that he's having the kind of senior season you hope everyone on the team can have,” Tafelski  said. “Every race that he has run for us this spring has been marked not just by his fitness, but also by his decisiveness and confidence.  We’re looking forward to seeing how he closes out his career, now that we're moving into the championship phase of the season.”

Triarsi will continue his running career in the fall at the University of Miami, where he plans to major in business.

“I’m looking forward to what the future has in store for me and I could not be more excited,” he said.
