WESTFIELD, NJ — The Westfield High School senior point guard scored 17 points in a close game against Plainfield Tuesday.

It was the latest success in a season of successes for Jake Walsh and the Westfield High School basketball team, the record for which stands at 9-2. Walsh is this week’s Ron Bansky and Associates Allstate Westfield Athlete of the Week.

“We’re on a seven-game winning streak,” Walsh said. “We’re feeling really good. We only won 10 games last year.”

The team’s top scoring player along with fellow senior Griffin Rooney this season, Walsh hopes to play basketball at a Division 3 school next year.

“I’m looking to play in college next year,” Walsh said. “I’m just going to wait it out to make my decision and take my time with it.”

The duo of Rooney and Walsh have presented a basketball powerhouse.

“Griffin and I, we have a really good relationship,” Walsh said. “We’ve both been the leaders of the team. He’s just great to have on the team. He’s a great teammate and a great scorer.”

The two have been playing together since fourth grade, he said.

“Griffin Rooney and Jake Walsh. They have really led our team together,” said head coach James McKeon.

Walsh played a key role in Tuesday night’s game against Plainfield.

“I just hit a couple of big shots to get us back in the game, and Logan Howland scored the game winning basket,” Walsh said.

The Westfield High School senior has high hopes for the rest of the hoops season.

“We’re trying to prove, and we have been proving, that Westfield basketball is really great,” Walsh said. “We’re just trying to go out with bang and make history.”

The team next plays at home Friday at 5:30 p.m.
