WESTFIELD, NJ — Julia Csorba finished with a time of 8.62 for the 55-meter-high hurdles at the NJSIAA Sectional Championships on Friday, tying with the Westfield High School record for the event.
The 17-year-old senior at Westfield High School holds 10 other school records in various track events. Csorba is this week’s Ron Bansky and Associates Allstate Westfield Athlete of the Week.
Csorba said she tends to focus most on the 400-meter hurdles outdoors, but she also runs the 55-meter hurdles, 200-meter and 400-meter indoors. She participates in the Distance Medley Relay, which is ranked first in New Jersey, fourth in the United States and has qualified for the Indoor Nationals on March 13.
When reflecting on the hard work she has put into the Track and Field program, Csorba said that she is proud of the great efforts she has put into running.
“If you can deal with the physical pain, it results in a really great feeling of personal achievement,” Csorba said. “A lot of sports are team sports where you’re relying on other people to help you, but with running you’re relying on what you have, so whatever you can put yourself through is what you get out of it.”
Head Coach Jennifer Buccino is especially impressed with Csorba’s ability to constantly remain committed to doing her best at every track meet.
“She is often needed to do more than one event and that can be overwhelming for any athlete,” Buccino said. “Her performances this season are a reflection of her commitment to improve both mentally and physically.”
Csorba began running for the Westfield Area YMCA Flyers after an email from her gym teacher encouraged her parents to push Csorba to pursue running. She began on the Westfield High School track team during the spring season of her freshman year.
Csorba is committed to Dartmouth College and plans to continue running with the Dartmouth Track and Field team. For now, Csorba intends to continue running with the Westfield High School track team.
“I’ll probably be focusing a lot on the 100-meter hurdles and the 400-meter hurdles since that is what I was recruited for in college, and my college coaches are expecting me to run certain times,” Csorba said. “I’d like to focus on the [Distance Medley Relay] Outdoor and break that school record and qualify for outdoor nationals.”
