WESTFIELD, NJ — Westfield High School junior Keeley Thompson won the 50 free and 400 free relay at last week’s swim meet against Scotch Plains-Fanwood, helping the Lady Blue Devils defeat the Raiders 96-74.
Along with Muriel Maloney, Thompson was one of two Westfield athletes to win an individual event against SP-F.
This week’s Ron Bansky and Associates Allstate Westfield Athlete of the Week “brings so much positive energy to both meets and practice,” head coach Steve Whittington said. “She is the kind of athlete that you can depend on for great swims.”
“I grew up spending summers by the lake, so my parents made me learn to swim at a very young age,” Thompson said. “My favorite part about swimming is being part of the Westfield High School swim team and swimming for Coach Whittington. I like the support and encouragement that I get from my teammates and coach. I love cheering on my fellow swimmers during meets and the excitement I feel when we win or someone gets a best time.”
Thompson said that she looks to her grandmother as her role model.
“She is almost 80 and still plays tennis, golf and travels the world. She never slows down,” Thompson said. “Few people other than my teammates know that I want to go to nursing school and follow in the footsteps of my grandmother.”
After the Lady Blue Devils’ impressive win against Scotch Plains-Fanwood, Thompson says she sees her team only getting stronger and more confident.
“I know we can put on a strong showing at counties in a couple of weeks,” she said. “As for me, I hope I can continue to improve on my 50 and 100 free.”
