WESTFIELD, NJ — Westfield High School girls varsity lacrosse player Lila Hutchins shined in this week’s win against Mountain Lakes.
“She held the ball in high pressure situations on attack,” head coach Abby Cohn said of this week’s Ron Bansky and Associates Allstate Westfield Athlete of the Week. “She made drives to the goal and, if she didn't think she could make the shot, she would cradle the ball back out and work for a better one. Her consistency in yesterday's game lifted our team to an ultimate victory.”
This is Cohn’s first season as a head coach for WHS.
“From the first day I met Lila and watched her in tryouts, I knew that she was a leader,” Cohn said. “She was always willing to help me out, to help others — her teammates — and constantly is asking how to improve. She asks how she can improve her skills in specific situations. She is a very coachable player, and that is a trait that coaches really appreciate and hope for all of their players to have.”
Hutchins, now a senior and co-captain, has played lacrosse since the second grade.
“I am super excited for my last season on the Westfield girls lacrosse team and I can't wait to see what's in store for Westfield glax,” Hutchins said. She loves “being on an awesome team with girls who love to play just as much as I do and make the sport so fun.”
On the field, Hutchins is inspired by her teammates.
“They are always pushing everyone to be the best they can be, which is really admirable,” she said. “In my life, my parents and my sister inspire me the most because they are who I aspire to be like when I'm their age.”
“Lila is a great example to her teammates both to her co-captains as well as to her younger teammates,” Cohn said. “She serves as a role model to them because of her attitude both on and off the field. Her hard work and dedication both on the field and in the classroom make Lila an exemplary student athlete within our program. As both a senior and captain, Lila knows exactly how to lift the team up when their down by both communication and in leading by example.”
What few people know, Hutchins said, is that she is also on the dive team at her pool during the summers.
Next fall, she will play lacrosse at Bates College in Lewiston, Maine.
“She will be a welcomed addition to their program,” Cohn said. “With her hard work and dedication on the field and in practice, Lila will be a coachable player that will help her team at college to succeed. I'm excited to hear about her future accomplishments there.”
