WESTFIELD, NJ — The tip-off of lacrosse, called “the draw,” plays a key role in the game, and sophomore LJ Kehler has been strong in seizing control of the ball when called to do so, her coach said.

A sophomore playing midfield, Kehler is this week’s Ron Bansky and Associates Allstate Westfield Athlete of the Week.

“LJ has been consistent on the draw as she is averaging about seven draw controls per game, which has been a significant part of our victories this week,” said head girls’ lacrosse coach Abby Cohn. Kehler is also adept at playing defense, Cohn said.

Kehler, who is the granddaughter of Gary Kehler, the namesake of Gary Kehler Stadium, said this year’s girls lacrosse team is a combination of new and returning players who have done well and are getting better with each game.

“Everyone on the team is working hard and contributing with the same goal in mind, which is to win,” Cohn said on Wednesday. “We’re 4-3 as of now and we are working hard to keep improving our record.”

Kehler also plays field hockey in the fall and said she snowboards in the winter.

“Lacrosse is definitely my favorite sport and takes up most of my time because I play club in the summer,” she said. “My academics are huge for me, and I like to play sports to balance that part of my life.”

Kehler is looking forward to the rest of the season.

“The team is small, but we have so many girls who are making a difference,” she said. “We play as a team and everyone plays unselfishly because we can all count on and have faith in every player on the field. I love every girl on the team, and I can’t wait to see where we can go this season.”
