WESTFIELD, NJ — The 6-foot-8 center helped to power the Westfield High School boys varsity basketball team to its first win of the season Wednesday in a game against Madison.

Logan Howland, a 17-year-old junior and captain of the team, was instrumental in the 58-49 win at home. Howland is this week’s Ron Banksy and Associates Allstate Westfield Athlete of the Week.

“Logan is a hard worker and a vocal leader of the team,” said head coach James McKeon. “His presence is felt on and off the court.”

Howland credits his teammate Jack Spellman for scoring three-points during overtime Wednesday. “We had the momentum from there,” said Howland, who himself netted 10 points and two assists.

Before the game, he said that, in addition to using the team’s three tallest players to score — Spellman, Sean Logan and himself — the team has been staying fit and improving its communication while on defense.

“We’ve been working on talking more on defense with our basketball team, and we’ve been working on conditioning as well, just to stay fit for the games,” he said.

His favorite part of the game: the camaraderie.

“We’ve been playing with each other, most of us, since the first grade,” Howland said. “Just playing with each other is a great experience. You’re not going to get that anywhere else.”

Howland, who also is a tight end with the Blue Devils’ football team, is looking at colleges. While his focus is to find a school to play football, Howland said, he is keeping his options open. “I’m still scoping it out,” Howland said.

At Westfield High School, he said, his favorite subject of study is history.

“I just want to learn about our past and not just in the U.S. but global history,” Howland said. “It’s an exciting thing I find interesting.”

The Blue Devils next play Linden in a home game set for 1 p.m. Monday.
