WESTFIELD, NJ — Co-captain of the Westfield High School girls’ varsity hockey team Maddie Katz is looking good to start her senior season.

The girl’s hockey program is in its fourth year, and Katz has been with the team since it was created. Katz is this week’s Ron Bansky and Associates Allstate Westfield Athlete of the Week. The team has been improving every year, and head coach Matthew Gualtieri has high expectations for Katz this season.

As of Wednesday, Katz was ranked by NJ.com as the top girls' hockey goal scorer in the state. Along with her own performance, she has seen the team strengthen over the past four years.

“My best memory throughout my high school career has been seeing the team develop into what it is today,” Katz said. “Seeing players with more experience come in every year, and girls who I have been playing with since the start improve has been really gratifying.”

Katz has been playing hockey since she was 9 years old. McDevitt first introduced her to the sport in third grade. Katz has also enjoyed seeing the sport grow and be recognized by the NJSIAA.

She played for the New Jersey Colonials through her sophomore year but focuses only on Westfield now. Katz joined the Lady Blue Devils as a forward in her freshman year, before developing her skills to play both offense and defense.

In fall of 2020, Katz will attend Tufts University, located outside of Boston.

“Unfortunately, the school does not have a girls’ hockey program, but being in Boston, I hope to attend as many games as possible,” she said.

The Lady Blue Devils will have a long break in between games. They will play Immaculate Heart on Jan. 8, long after their Dec. 18 matchup against Summit.
