WESTFIELD, NJ — Westfield High School girls varsity lacrosse midfielder McKenna Edmondson is a key player on the team that won its first sectional title in school history last week.

This week’s Ron Bansky and Associates Allstate Westfield Athlete of the Week is known for her hard work and dedication.

“She works very hard in practice to perfect her draw skills and, because of this, she has been proven a challenge for many draw specialists in the state,” head coach Abby Cohn said. “Her ability to win the draw has led our team to success right from the start of many of our games."

As a midfielder, Edmonson has also served as a threat on both defense and attack, Cohn said.

Edmondson began playing lacrosse in second grade, when her mother was the coach for her older siblings.

“She couldn’t leave me at home alone, so she brought me and I would play in all the games and drills and stuff, and then I just never stopped,” Edmondson said.

She said she loves the team aspect of the game.

“Every time I show up to play, I know that I get to play the best sport in the world next to all my best friends,” she said. “I know my teammates will always be there to pick me up.”

From the time she moved to Westfield in eighth grade until now, Edmondson has built a strong bond with the other players. The girls have a nickname for her —“Cog” — because she moved from Chicago.

To Edmondson, winning the sectional title 10-4 against Bridgewater Raritan is the culmination of all of the Lady Blue Devils’ hard work. The team motivated themselves by looking at the empty space in the gym where their sectional championship banner might hang.

“All season we would say, ‘add to the banner’ to motivate us to leave our mark on Westfield girls lacrosse history,” Edmonson said. “Winning a sectional title means everything to me and to the program as a whole. Our sectional title just goes to show that Westfield is making a name for ourselves in the state of New Jersey and that we’re here to stay as some of the toughest competition in the state.”

Edmonson is committed to playing lacrosse next year at Washington and Lee University.
