WESTFIELD, NJ — Westfield High School swimmer Muriel Maloney shined during the recent Union County Championships, helping her team take home second place and earning several chances to compete in the upcoming Meet of Champions as an individual and with her relay teams.

Maloney is this week’s Ron Bansky and Associates Allstate Westfield Athlete of the Week.

“Her best swims this year have been performed when the competition was the fastest and when she was needed the most,” head coach Steven Whittington said. “Muriel is the only girl on the team so far that has qualified for two individual events at the Meet of Champions. She is a swimmer who takes the sport very seriously and wears her heart on her sleeve.”

Maloney said that she loves the rewarding feeling she gets when her hard work in the pool pays off.

“Being able to swim fast for my team and Coach Whittington gives me a great sense of accomplishment,” she said.

Now a junior, Maloney will only continue to improve, her coach predicted.

“Any athlete who is that is that determined to get fast will get faster,” Whittington said. “Muriel is that determined athlete and because of this she has found a level of success from which she will build upon. She will only get faster from her on in, which spells bad news to all the teams we swim against.”

Maloney’s hero is her older sister, Maeve.

“She was an exceptional swimmer herself, but sadly did not get to finish out her career how she planned,” Maloney said. “This has motivated me to swim not only for myself, but for her, too. I have always looked up to her since I was little and I want to succeed just like she did. I love being able to hear how proud she is of me achieving my goals.”

Outside of the pool, Maloney said she has a passion for travel.

“I have been to 35 of the 50 states with my family and the list is growing,” she said. “I have also been out of the country twice, once to Europe and once to Africa. My favorite place that I have been is Madagascar. It was amazing to see such a different culture and experience it with my family.”

The Meet of Champions takes place the weekend of March 4 and 5.
