WESTFIELD, NJ — As the Blue Devils track team’s most consistent sprinter, senior Nick Greenspan helped Westfield win the county tournament this weekend, running in the third-place sprint medley and 4x100 relays and on winning 4x200 and 4x400 relays.
“He's the most consistent and most improved sprinter we have,” head coach Chris Tafelski said of this week’s Ron Bansky and Associates Allstate Westfield Athlete of the Week.
“Nick is one the hardest working kids we have,” Tafelski said. “He made steady improvements from freshman year to his junior year, but his improvement from junior year to senior is staggering. Last year he ran 55 for a 400.”
Now Greenspan runs the 400 in under 50 seconds.
“At year ago, if you had told anyone on our team that he would be a sub-50 guy, they would have laughed at you. But here he is. He made that drop because he focuses on everything every day, and he works tremendously hard,” Tafelski said. “It's a huge milestone for a 400 runner. In an average year we have maybe one kid to do it, occasionally two. We have had years that nobody accomplished that. So it's a pretty big deal for our team, especially since he was nowhere near this level of performance a year ago.”
Greenspan leads his team by example, according to Tafelski.
“We have such a big team that we rely on the older guys to set the tone — the coaches can't do it all,” he said. “He's a fantastic mentor for our younger guys.”
Greenspan said he’s inspired by his siblings, including soccer player Joseph, who played for the Colorado Rapids last year while simultaneously serving in the Navy.
“My older brothers Joseph and Alex certainly inspire me, both currently being in the Navy,” Greenspan said, “as well as my sister Caroline, as she has always been an exceptional soccer player and has always been very supportive of me throughout my track career.”
