WESTFIELD, NJ — Westfield High School varsity track athlete Sarah Hacker ran a personal best time of 11:21 in the 3200 race at Saturday’s Meet of Champions.
“She qualified out of a tough sectional 3200 race, qualified through groups by earning a wild card to MOCs, then ran a personal best of 11:21 to place 16th overall in the 3200 race at the MOCs,” head coach Joe Berardi said of this week’s Ron Bansky and Associates Allstate Westfield Athlete of the Week. “Sarah battled through races of 90-plus degree heat and high humidity to earn a wild card, and we couldn't be more proud of her.”
Hacker said she joined cross country team her freshman year so that she could be part of a team, and she’s been a Lady Blue Devil ever since.
“I love the team aspect — all of the girls on the team are so spirited, which gets me so excited to race,” Hacker said. “Although you may run a race individually, everyone really pushes each other during practice and races.”
Hacker said that she looks up to all of the seniors on her team.
“Throughout my three years of being on the team they have always motivated me, and have pushed me to go way farther than I could ever imagine,” she said. “Going into my junior year, I would have never thought that I would be making it to MOCs, especially all the three seasons.”
In her upcoming senior year, she hopes to continue to break personal records, with a goal to beat the 3200 outdoor school record.
“Her junior year campaign was one defined by consistency and toughness,” coach Berardi said. “She will be a great leader as a captain in the fall.”
