WESTFIELD, NJ — Two goals, three assists, one weekend.

That stat line is what has earned junior ice hockey player Sean Taylor this week’s Ron Bansky and Associates Allstate Athlete of the Week award.

With Taylor’s offensive firepower, the varsity Blue Devils were able to rack up to two wins over the weekend over Verona, 2-1, and Montclair Kimberly, 7-2, to move to 4-0-3 on the season.

“I feel like this has been my best season for me in my three years at WHS, and I think it has been a big help to the team that I have been able to put the puck in the net,” Taylor said. “I love this group of guys we have this year. It is the closest unit I have ever played on and I am excited to see where this goes.”

Currently, the Blue Devils are ranked the No. 8 public ice hockey team in the state. Head coach Joseph Bertucci gives Taylor credit for the team’s early season success.

“Sean is a competitive kid and will do anything to win,” Bertucci said. “He is one of our fastest players and uses his speed with and without the puck. Sean plays a big role on this team, logging top minutes and is on power play and penalty kill.”

Taylor began playing skating and playing ice hockey at 4 years old when he attended a clinic at the Union Sports Arena.

“I love the creativity and the high intensity of the game,” said Taylor, who is now tied for the team season lead with seven total points through seven games.

Senior captain and goalkeeper Ethan Finver admires Taylor for the dedication he has shown to the sport.

“Sean is one of the hardest working kids I've ever played with and is shows in his stats,” Finver said. “I’d say his best quality is that he makes the players around him better. He has the ability to take over a game in a matter of seconds.”

Taylor has been a contributor on the varsity since his freshmen year, and he, along with Finver, see this season as the team’s best opportunity yet to make noise in the Public A division.

“I think we are real contenders for a county championship and maybe even a big run in states,” Taylor said.

The team will next play tonight against a strong Cranford at Warnaco Park. Puck drop is set for 8:45 p.m.

Having chaired the town council’s finance committee in the recent past, I appreciate the hard work that goes into developing a municipal budget for a town as large and dynamic as Westfield. But as I have expressed publicly and also to the mayor and my council colleagues, I do not support the adoption of Westfield’s 2018 municipal budget. Although the budget contains much that I ...

Why We Keep Kosher

Why We Keep Kosher

This week's parshah, Shemini, introduces the Torah's dietary laws. Animals must chew their cud and have split hooves to be kosher, fish need fins and scales, and a list of forbidden fowl is enumerated.

To those of us in Jewish education, it is a continuing source of disappointment that so many Jews still believe the kosher laws to be outdated.
