WESTFIELD, NJ — Westfield High School junior Sebastian Ferrero overcame a preseason ankle injury to become one of the leaders on the boys varsity basketball team this year.
“After a sluggish start, he has sparked the team both offensively and defensively,” head coach Daryl Palmieri said of this week’s Ron Bansky and Associates Allstate Westfield Athlete of the Week.
“I can see Sebastian using some of the experience that he gained last year as a sophomore to help us compete in games,” Palmieri said. “Along with being one of our better scorers, he has also been one of our better defenders over the past month. He comes to work every day in practice and pushes his teammates to be better.”
Ferrero said he started playing when he was 6 or 7 years old at the Westfield Area YMCA.
“I like how I’m able to be myself when I’m playing,” he said. “I feel like nothing is bothering me — I can just play basketball and have the time of my life.”
In addition to the seniors on his team, Ferrero said he looks up to his dad as a role model.
“He’s a really headstrong guy and he’s taught me how to be a respectable person, not only on the basketball court but off of it,” Ferrero said. “He really pushes me to be the best player and best person I can be.”
When he’s not playing basketball, Ferrero prides himself in his schoolwork.
“I’m really focused on school — it’s not just basketball for me,” he said. “I like math and science. I want to possibly be an engineer.”
Looking forward this season, Ferrero has high hopes for his team, which has lost in some close games.
“I think that we’re a better team than our record shows,” he said. “I think we have potential to be a really, really good team, as long as we stay together … I think that the senior leadership on our team is a big part of that, and as long as they are able to lead the team and keep us together, we can be very successful.”
