Allstate Westfield Athlete of the Week: Shannon Devitt

WESTFIELD, NJ — Senior forward Shannon Devitt has been one of the key components to Westfield High School girls basketball team’s success, according to head coach Liz McKeon. Also a talented field hockey player, she helped lead WHS to its first conference championship in over 30 years this fall.

“Last season, Shannon looked to put the team on her back a lot of the time,” McKeon said. “This year she has adjusted nicely to a balanced attack with her fellow teammates. The ‘team’ attitude she and her teammates have is what has gotten us to where we are today.”

“My number one motivation on the court is my love of the game,” the basketball co-captain and this week’s Ron Bansky and Associates Allstate Westfield Athlete of the Week said.  “It is what drives me to work hard at every practice and keeps me trying to get better at every opportunity I get.”

Devitt said her hero is her older sister, Nicole, who is a junior at the University of Delaware.

“I have always looked up to her and I still aspire to be like her. Even though I could probably beat her one-on-one in basketball since middle school, she taught me to be humble, calm and patient,” she said. “I owe a lot of my success as an athlete to all of my coaches at the high school. From coach MacDonald in field hockey and softball to coach Marino and coach McKeon in basketball, each coach not only helped me to be better athletically but they also are responsible for building my character.”

Off the court, Devitt helps her family raise puppies to become seeing eye dogs. That may come as no surprise to fans and teammates.

“The puppies have always been a constant mascot at all of the basketball games,” Devitt said.

Devitt has committed to play basketball next year at The College of New Jersey.

“I see Shannon being very successful on and off the court when she goes to college next year,” McKeon said.

The Lady Blue Devils defeated Edison Wednesday to advance to the sectional semi final at Franklin High School. The game will take place Friday at 7 p.m.

Staying On Top

Some people are bulldozers. They move mountains, conquer countries, achieve the seemingly impossible. But then when there are no more mountains to climb, they falter. Routines, maintenance and sustainability are not their strong points. They respond to excitement and challenge, not to the uneventful, monotonous daily grind.

Can I Change My Partner?

March 21, 2018

Couples oftentimes look to change the “other.” “If only” the other would make these changes, or do as I say, our relationship would be great. We tend to focus on the other. We tend to focus on changing the other. We tend to focus on the other’s negative behavior. Couples like to report what their spouse/partner is doing and how they are ...
