WESTFIELD, NJ — Westfield High School cross country runner Taylor Bechtloff set a school record recently for her performance at the Thompson Park course at the Fall Classic.
“She broke 20 minutes on the course with a 19:51 at that meet,” head coach Jennifer Buccino said.
Bechtloff is this week’s Ron Bansky and Associates Allstate Westfield Athlete of the Week.
The WHS senior's accomplishment is all the more impressive because this is her first year running cross country. During her freshman, sophomore and junior years, she played soccer.
Since then, “She has been rising through the ranks each week,” her coach said.
“I switched because of my love for the team and the sport itself,” Bechtloff. “I love that it teaches you so much about yourself.”
On the track, Bechtloff is finding that when she pushes herself she can accomplish things she never thought possible.
“I think my team motivates me most,” Bechtloff said. “Every time I run I run for them.”
The person who she looks up to most? Her mom.
“Her strength inspires me whenever I’m having a hard time,” Bechtloff said.
