WESTFIELD, NJ — Under the leadership of captain Trevor Tanella, the Westfield varsity ice hockey team has risen to fourth in the state’s public B rankings.

The senior scored four goals and had one assist in a three game stretch to close out 2019. He then opened the New Year with four assists in a 7-1 victory against Glen Rock on Jan. 4. Tanella is this week’s Ron Bansky and Associates Allstate Westfield Athlete of the Week.

New Jersey Devils radio announcer and Westfield resident Matt Loughlin has known Trevor and his family for several years.

“I am so excited to see the success of Trevor and the Westfield Blue Devils,” Loughlin said. “I have noticed hard work is a value his whole family instills, and Trevor is an example of hard work and talent. He will have a great senior season.”

Tanella is well on his way, leading the team in points with five goals and seven assists.

“If I do one thing poorly, the other guys might follow, so I always have to make sure I’m on my game,” Tanella said. “Leading by example is a big part of my game.”

That was made clear in the Blue Devils’ win against Glen Rock on the team’s opening goal. Tanella intercepted a pass at mid ice, weaved through multiple defenders before shoveling a pass to a wide-open Brendan Hiltz. Later in the game, Tanella delivered a goal that had the Westfield bench excitedly banging their sticks against the boards.

Tanella, who also plays lacrosse at the high school, will be attending Providence College in the fall where he plans to study finance.

“I love the hockey aspect there, it’s a really great program at Providence,” he said. “I won’t be playing there, but I’m excited to attend as many games as possible.”

Head coach Joseph Bertucci noted Tanella's success.

“He logs a lot of minutes on defense and has shut down the opposing teams' top lines,” Bertucci said.
