WESTFIELD, NJ — Senior Zack Rodrigues has played a huge part in the Westfield High School bowling team’s success this year, especially over the past week, according to head coach Ralph Corey.

“A match against Rahway in which we were missing our strongest bowler — Alex Cohen — Zack led this team to a victory securing his personal best high series, 257, 204 and 168, to finish the day with a 629 total wood,” Corey said of this week’s Ron Bansky and Associates Allstate Westfield Athlete of the Week.

In addition, the Blue Devils recently competed in the first round of the Union County Tournament, where Rodrigues helped his team advance to the final top eight.  Rodrigues’ performance in the match secured him a spot to represent Westfield High School in the Individual Union County Tournament in Linden Wednesday, where he advanced to the next round.

Rodrigues was new to the team las t year and had never competed in bowling before.

“Zack's first season was a learning season for him,” Corey said. “Knowing four spots were available on the varsity team this year, Zack worked extremely hard to improve his game.”

The coach said that Rodrigues’ work ethic at practices demonstrates the focus and drive he thinks every varsity player should have at this level.

“Zack is a competitor, a true teammate, and very studious of the game,” Corey said. “Zack will ask me many questions about the game and how to improve his technique.  Although Zack does not have the title as co-captain this year, his senior leadership has been instrumental to the team.”

Corey said that Rodrigues is truly committed to his teammates.

“He thrives on helping his team be successful and truly enjoys seeing his teammates perform at the highest level,” Corey said. “Zack is a very determined, self-motivated student athlete. Observing Zack's success over the past two seasons, his work ethic and commitment and his passion leads me to believe Zack will be very successful in college and his career.  I am very grateful to have had the opportunity to coach Zack these past two years but, more importantly, to get to know Zack as a person.”
