First Congregational Church of Westfield is a spiritual community with a long and rich history of encouraging freedom of thought and a strong commitment to supporting and serving those who are socially and economically disadvantaged. In all aspects of its life and mission, FCC welcomes and affirms people of every race, age, gender, marital circumstance, sexual orientation and expression, physical or psychological ability, economic condition, ethnic origin, and theological tradition.
FCC is a congregation of welcoming and open-hearted people who have discovered the freedom and joy a life of faith offers. Parents, singles, seniors, teens and children — we live out our faith daily in our varied walks of life. A member of the United Church of Christ, the community at FCC comes from a broad mix of denominational backgrounds, including Roman Catholic, Presbyterian, Baptist, Episcopal, Lutheran and Quaker, and even no faith background at all.
The Board of Outreach Ministries at First Congregational Church offers many opportunities to become involved, serve, and make a positive impact in the world. Through volunteer efforts, communion offerings, individual giving, special fund-raisers and an alternative gift program, the FCC community provides active support to a number of organizations including the homeless.
One such organization is the Elizabeth Coalition to House the Homeless. One of the first to advocate on behalf of New Jersey’s homeless, the Elizabeth Coalition has helped thousands of people in Union County each year gain shelter, rental assistance, rent subsidies, and permanent housing.
The FCC community supports the Elizabeth Coalition’s work through various volunteer efforts, including our popular upcoming “Super Bowl Party.”
On the first Sunday in February each year, FCC Deacons and Board of Outreach members join its Youth Fellowship to host an annual Super Bowl event at the Coalition. The youth and adults join the Coalition, its Operation Warm Heart clients and families from the Coalition’s Hospitality Housing units for a hearty meal, followed by a rousing afternoon of Bingo, where game winners can choose a prize from a plethora of items donated by church members.
It’s a wonderful afternoon of fellowship and fun, as all of the clients leave feeling supported, and the youth give them the gift of their time and friendship.
“Community is one of the first losses when you become homeless making the person feel isolated from normal interactions,” states Linda Flores-Tober, Executive Director of the Elizabeth Coalition to House the Homeless. “This simple gesture gives people a chance to relax and enjoy community and just feel not homeless for a short time.”
If you are new to the area or are seeking a new spiritual community that regularly serves those in need, please visit us during our regular Sunday 10 a.m. worship. All are welcome!
