WESTFIELD, NJ — A man who taught art in the Westfield Public Schools for eight years is making his presence known again here. Ricardo Roig is opening an art gallery on South Avenue.
Roig and his wife, Michelle, a Spanish teacher at Tamaques School, will formally open the gallery on Saturday in the space once occupied by the fabric store, Urban Sewciety, which has since expanded in another location in town.
“My work is inspired by life, made up of colors and shapes,” said Roig, 35, of Hoboken. “I try to bring awareness to the beauty that envelops everyday life”
Roig’s work is comprised of hand-cut paper stints. “I spend a lot of time alone in the studio cutting shapes out of paper. It’s very calming, peaceful and a nice way to reflect and meditate,” Roig said.
The gallery, Fine Art by Ricardo Roig, will offer custom framing and art classes in the approximately 800-square-foot location at 305 South Ave. West, he said.
Roig’s career in Westfield schools has included time teaching at Jefferson School, Lincoln School, McKinley School and Franklin School.
The art studio in Westfield will offer classes and a place for youths to display their artwork as well, Roig said, bringing to local children something he experienced as a youth.
“Once a month, I’m going to pick drawings from kids who submit them and put them up,” he said. “As a kid, when I was in a district art show, it was like ‘Oh my God. People are seeing my art.’ It was a good feeling.”
Roig’s works to be on display at the gallery include a series detailing spots in Westfield.
“I have a lot of good energy and have had a lot of luck in my life. I’m just trying to push it forward,” he said.
With his team handling everyday operations, Roig said, he will be splitting his time between the gallery in Westfield and two others he runs in Hoboken.
“Whether I’m there are not, I’m still felt through the art,” Roig said. “It’s still a place for you to go, create some memories and feel some shared humanity in this beautiful world.”
