WESTFIELD, NJ —  The GAP’s women’s fitness apparel store Athleta opened its Westfield shop Monday at 234 E. Broad Street downtown, the space previously occupied by GAP Kids, which is now located across the street.

Featuring apparel that was originally only available online, this now marks the sixth  brick-and-mortar Athleta store to open in New Jersey and the 100th nationwide.

You’ll find the latest trends in fashion at Athleta - sporty, feminine and urban-chic designs meant to appeal to a woman’s active lifestyle, both in the gym and out running errands.

“Athleta is focused on serving women’s fitness and lifestyle needs,” said Athleta Spokesperson Sarah Andrus. Athleta “offers both fashion-fueled fitness and lifestyle apparel and accessories. From the quintessential gym bag and yoga mats that the most diehard yogis swear by to headbands and scarves, Athleta has you covered.”

With so many fitness- and health-minded women in the area, Westfield is an ideal location to bring a fashionable line of fitness and lifestyle apparel, according to Andrus.

“As with other markets, we tapped into our amazing existing catalog and online customer base to help us pinpoint Westfield. Having a store in a health-conscious, active community like this will not only reach our existing customers, but also introduce more women to Athleta and the fashion-fueled apparel we offer for a life in motion,” she said.

Athleta is reminiscent of Lululemon, yet its outfits cost 20 percent less on average. It also offers something Lululemon doesn’t — a wide range of apparel from swimwear and sundresses to athletic attire and gear with sizes that range from XXS to 2X and include petite and tall.

“Many of our competitors offer performance or lifestyle apparel, but Athleta has extraordinary expertise and strength in both categories,” said Andrus. “It’s about owning the fusion of premium performance, fashion and lifestyle. Our focus is on integrating fresh, modern silhouettes, patterns and colors into our technical designs to give our customers the performance products she wants.”

Athleta offers free in-store fitness classes on a regular basis. The Westfield location will begin classes sometime within the next 90 days. Check here for class listings.

“We offer free in-store fitness classes with the hottest instructors,” said Andrus. “The fitness classes and schedule will vary depending on the store itself, and all our fixtures are on wheels so we turn the store into a studio. Many locations offer free yoga, Pilates and barre classes in addition to more curated classes that will speak to the Westfield woman and her fitness needs.”

Athleta offers other perks that help it stand out from the rest, including their “Give-It-A-Workout Guarantee,” which lets customers try out the apparel and see if it performs well; if you don’t like it, you can return it for free. It also offers personalized styling services and a discount for fitness professionals.

Westfield’s Athleta will host its grand opening party on Thursday, Aug. 7. at 6 p.m, when the public is invited to enjoy free refreshments from a local vendor, music, giveaways, prizes and more.
