WESTFIELD, NJ — The Piscataway High School varsity baseball team was full of confidence and had some momentum with a little two-game winning streak heading into the North Jersey, Section 2, Group 4 Tournament, but 11th-seeded Chiefs ran into a solid sixth-seeded Westfield squad.

Behind excellent pitching and power at the plate, the Blue Devils beat Piscataway, 10-0, in the first round of the tournament on Tuesday afternoon.

Connor Scanlon shut down the Chiefs tossing a six inning three-hit shutout with three strikeouts.

On offense, Westfield jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Piscataway didn’t quit, but a costly error allowed Chris Wagner and James Friel to both smack home runs in the second inning to take a 9-0 lead. Wagner, Friel, and Jake Lerie all finished with two hits, two RBI, and two runs scored.

Matt LaCorte, Matt McIntyre, Kobi Wolf, Jake Vall-Llobera, Michael Knapp, Steven Barden and Arthur Xiao all recorded a hit each as well.

The Blue Devils added a run in the bottom of the sixth to go up by 10 runs which ended the game.

Nick Bucci, James Ingram and Parris Washington all singled for Piscataway. On the mound, starter Jason Mahmood took the loss giving up nine runs, 10 hits, and one walk while striking out only one in the first two innings.

Relief man Jordin Martell did a formidable job giving the Chiefs a chance to come back however going 3 ⅔ innings and giving up only three hits, two walks, and the one run in the sixth while fanning six.

With the win, Westfield moves on to face third-seeded Bayonne in the quarterfinals on Thursday while Piscataway ends the 2017 campaign at an even 13-13 record.
