WESTFIELD, NJ — There’s a brewery in the hopper for this town.

The Planning Board on Monday approved Lions Roar Brewing Company’s application to build a microbrewery at 515-523 South Avenue West, the board’s secretary, Linda Jacus, said.

A website for the company states the following: “A neighborhood brewery coming to Westfield, NJ.”

A Twitter page for Lions Roar Brewing Company that showed no Tweets states that the company is a “Neighborhood brewery focused on providing refreshing beer in a setting designed to help you escape the 9 to 5.”

The Planning Board granted variances for parking spaces, sign height, sign width and maximum coverage areas, among others. Local regulations require 36 parking spaces; the plans provide no parking spaces, according to the agenda. The board approved the plans with no conditions, Jacus said.

The Lions Roar Brewing Company Facebook page provides the following slogan: “Craft Beer – ‘Proud to be Loud!’”

Last September, the Town Council approved regulations intended to draw microbreweries and craft distilleries into its downtown.

Councilwoman Dawn Mackey, who chair’s the town’s Code Review Committee, then said the municipality had received inquiries about the legality of such an establishment.

“That will be a very energizing thing for our town,” Mackey then told TAPinto Westfield. “As the Ward 4 council member, I very much would love it to be on the south side.”
