WESTFIELD, NJ — A special back-to-school “Bestfield” shopping event was held at Downtown Westfield’s Athleta Thursday night, featuring a book signing by Laurie Gelman, author of the bestselling novel “Class Mom.”
Anne Laird, owner of The Town Book Store, said that she nearly sold out her 75 copies of the book.
“What I really love about this is how it brought people into my store,” Laird said. “I’ve been excited because, you know, it’s hard owning a little independent book store.”
Laird thanked Meaghan Murphy, the town’s volunteer “chief spirit officer,” who organized the event.
“She’s somebody who’s so enthusiastic,” Laird said. “She just really wants the town and the stores to succeed.”
There was a charity aspect to the evening, as well. Leading up to the event and that night, Athleta and the Town Book Store collected hundreds of school supplies for kids at the Boys & Girls Club of Plainfield. The collection is ongoing until Monday.
Refreshments were provided by the Salad House and NosVino, which offered virgin “Bestinis.” “Bestfield” cookies were provided by Peapods Cookies. Prizes for shoppers entered into a drawing were donated by the Farmhouse Store, NosVino, Orange Theory, Sweet Waters, Satsung Yoga, Club Pilates, JeniFit Studios, Poe Yoga, The Town Book Store, Kids MusicRound, Out Run Your Fork, Alpha Performance Studio, House Yoga, Orange Theory, Patricia & Paul and Limani Seafood Grill.
