WESTFIELD, NJ — Families headed to Washington Elementary School Monday morning should be on the lookout for bear, police said.

A black bear was spotted near the school on St. Mark’s Avenue Sunday evening, police said in a Nixle alert at 11:40 p.m.

“Use caution when outdoors,” police stated. “Bring in all pets and do not approach the bear. Pay special attention at morning drop off due to bear in the area.”

Earlier in the evening, police in neighboring Cranford warned of a black bear in residential yards of Pawnee and Shawnee roads, another Nixle alert said.

Residents may report bear sightings to police via the Westfield Police Department’s non-emergency number, 908-789-4000, ext. 0. For emergencies, dial 911.

The public may also report black bear damage or nuisance behavior to the state Department of Environmental Protection’s 24-hour, toll-free hotline at 1-877-WARN DEP (1-877-927-6337).
