SCOTCH PLAINS, NJ — A black bear sighted near Scotch Plains-Fanwood High School Thursday morning appeared to be heading toward Westfield Thursday afternoon, according to  Scotch Plains Police. It was seen in the area of Mountain Avenue in Scotch Plains, not far from Route 22.

Westfield Police Chief David Wayman advised people to stay away from the bear call police if they spotted it.

The SP-F school district alerted parents about the bear just before 7:30 a.m. Thursday, urging them to use caution and informing them that school would begin at its regular time.

The bear has been seen running through yards in Scotch Plains and Fanwood.
