CRANFORD, NJThe Cranford Jaycees held their annual Leonard Snyder Memorial Fishing Derby at Nomahegan Park on Sunday.

From 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., kids spread throughout the park and casted their poles to compete for prizes that included gift cards and fishing poles. Registration began at 9 a.m., with boys and girls split into their own divisions and age groups. The age groups consisted of six and under, 7-9, and 10-13 years old.

First, second, and third place winners of each age group per gender received a prize. Third place won a $15 gift card to Cougar Headquarters, second place received a $20 gift card to Cougar Headquarters, and first place took home a brand new fishing pole.

Along with the top three placers, there was an extra incentive to be won. The Cranford Jaycees released a golden trout into the water, and whoever caught it would win a $50 Amazon gift card.

In the end, the golden trout was nowhere to be found, so the $50 gift card was awarded to Cole Yablonski who caught the largest fish of the day, a 19.5-inch catfish. Cole’s massive catfish won the boys’ 7-9 age group.

Cole’s younger sister, Eliza, also took home a prize, winning second place in the girls six and under group with a 9.5-inch fish.

There was no secret to the Yablonski’s success as they used the night crawlers handed out to the participants. It all came down to being in the right spot at the right time.
