SCOTCH PLAINS, NJ — The Westfield High School varsity boys basketball team edged out Scotch Plains-Fanwood Thursday night in a thrilling game, 60-59.
The Blue Devils held a three-point lead with under a minute left when the Raiders had a chance to score with 17 seconds left. Scotch Plains-Fanwood hit the final shot, a two-pointer, which left them one shy of Westfield’s total.
The Raiders were down by just a bucket, 15-13, when the first quarter ended, but Westfield seized control of the fame in the second quarter in which they outscored SPF by a margin of 18-8. Early in the third quarter, when it looked like Westfield might run away with the game, the Raiders staged a comeback. They outscored Westfield in the final quarter, 24-13, but couldn't catch up before the clock ran out.
Matt Crowley, who is scoring an average of 12.4 points/game this season, led Westfield’s balanced attack with 14 points. Griffin Rooney added 10 points, and Jake Walsh contributed 8. Ten Blue Devils scored in the game.
The Raiders were led by Anthony Porter, who seemed to be around the ball the entire game and sacrificing his body on every loose ball, and Justin Guy, who both hit for 16 points. Justice Fletcher had 10 points, followed by Jayson Williams and Nick Merkel, who had seven.
Westfield plays next against Columbia High School on Saturday at 1 p.m. at home. Scotch Plains-Fanwood next hosts Ridge on Saturday at 3:30 p.m.
