ROSELLE, NJ — The Westfield Blue Devils defeated Montville by a score of 4-1 behind freshman Matteo Mancheno’s two goals on Wednesday night.
After a scoreless 13 minutes to open the game, Mancheno broke the tie on a one-timer slapshot goal to give the Blue Devils a one goal lead. He added his second goal of the game to make it 2-0 early in the second period off a pass in front from Trevor Tanella.
“It’s important to get the momentum in the opening period,” Mancheno said. “The second goal is definitely just as important as the first one. It gives us an edge heading into the third period.”
Andrew Principato gave Westfield a three-goal lead early in the final period, after a missed opportunity on a breakaway just one minute before his goal.
The Mustangs finally put an end to the growing Blue Devil momentum, as Matt Szwagulinski capitalized on a power play, with just over 11 minutes to play.
With less than 5 minutes remaining, Matt Beke netted a power play goal to put the Blue Devils up 4-1.
“Our whole season has led up to this upcoming league tournament and states,” senior captain Trevor Tanella said. “We have to keep our heads straight and perform the best we can. That all starts with me. Being the captain, I always have to set the example for the guys and make sure we come prepared for the end of the season.”
The Blue Devils will face Glen Rock on Saturday at 4 p.m. in the opening round of the McInnis Cup.
