ROSELLE, NJ — The Summit Hilltoppers beat Westfield 3-1 Saturday night to win their eighth Union County Cup title in the 12-year history of the tournament.

Summit senior Jake Puskar led the Hilltoppers with a hat trick, scoring his first goal of the game early in the opening period to put Summit up 1-0.

“There’s no better feeling than scoring early in the game,” Puskar said. “We always want to set the tone for the rest of the game.”

The top seeded Hilltoppers made it 2-0 just 1 minute into the second period, which had the outnumbered Summit fans energetic.

“We love when the fans come to support us,” Puskar said. “It gives us more confidence coming into the game knowing that they came to watch us play.”

The largest Westfield crowd of the year roared as Dan McDonald scored his fifth goal of the year to cut the lead in half.

With 9 minutes to go in the game, Puskar put the puck through his own legs and wrapped around goalie Jack Ruckman to make it 3-1.

This was the fourth consecutive year the two teams played in the County championship. The Blue Devils last won in 2018.

“This is an important game for the entire team, the boys all get ready for this one,” said Westfield head coach Joe Bertucci. “It’s definitely disappointing to lose this one.”

Westfield looks to bounce back against Montclair Kimberley Academy on Jan. 30, who they beat 7-0 back on Dec. 5.
