SCOTCH PLAINS/FANWOOD, NJ — Westfield proved to be a bit faster and deeper than the Scotch Plains-Fanwood boys swim team on Thursday, Dec. 19, as the Blue Devils defeated the Raiders, 101-69 at the Westfield Area YMCA.
The difference between the teams might have been even larger had the 200 Medley Relay team not gotten disqualified for having one of its swimmers leave the blocks early. Were it not for the miscue, the team would have won the race, but instead the Raiders got the victory in the event. An SPF team also was disqualified in the race.
Despite the loss, Scotch Plains-Fanwood Coach Jess Hulnik was satisfied with her team's performance.
“The boys swam out of their minds today, and we had a lot of personal best times,” Coach Hulnik said after the meet. “We held it close for a while, but they were a little better. I can't be disappointed.”
Westfield swimmers Jeremy Kronheimer and Kyle Altman said that their team circles the Scotch Plains-Fanwood meet on their calendar once the schedules are announced and that they look forward the showdown every year.
“We were very prepared and focused,” Kronheimer said. “We came in knowing we would give it all in every race.”
“Every year we look forward to this meet and beating Scotch Plains,” Altman added.
Scotch Plains-Fanwood won five of the first six races, including victories by Matt London in the 50 Free and 100 Free. Westfield responded by taking the last five events, including the 200 Free and 400 Free Relays. Roan Baker won the 200 IM and the 100 Back and later anchored the winning 400 Free Relay to lead Westfield.
